Where Belmont's Curse Fits: The Series Play-Order Guide
Belmont's Curse is set 23 years after Castlevania: Dracula's Curse — the third NES game, famous for its branching paths and four playable characters (Trevor Belmont, Sypha, Grant and Alucard). If you want to walk in prepared, here's the shortest path:
- Castlevania: Dracula's Curse (NES, 1989) — the direct predecessor. Play Trevor's route, then read up on the other three characters. The new game's "23 years later" hook lands much harder if you know how Dracula's Curse ended.
- Castlevania III context on YouTube — if NES difficulty isn't your thing, a longplay with commentary gets you the story in 40 minutes.
- Symphony of the Night (1997) — not required reading for the plot, but it's the blueprint for the Metroidvania design Belmont's Curse builds on, and it's widely available via the Castlevania Advance & Anniversary collections on modern platforms.
- Dead Cells (2018) — the developers' own game. One evening with it teaches you the combat rhythm Evil Empire builds toward: fast, mobile, punishing greed.
Timeline Cheat Sheet (Classic Continuity)
The classic Castlevania timeline is long, but Belmont's Curse anchors to one specific point:
- 1691 — Castlevania (NES): Simon Belmont defeats Dracula.
- 1476 — Dracula's Curse (NES, set earlier): Trevor Belmont + Sypha + Grant + Alucard defeat Dracula. This is the anchor event.
- Belmont's Curse (2026 game): set 23 years after Dracula's Curse — roughly 1499 in continuity terms, with Rose Belmont as the new lead of the clan.
(Yes, the NES numbering and internal chronology don't match — Castlevania III is a prequel to Castlevania I. That's period-accurate NES logic for you.)
