Beginner's Guide to Castlevania: Belmont's Curse
This guide is written for two groups: players brand new to Castlevania, and Metroidvania veterans who want to know what's different here. It covers everything confirmed before launch, plus genre fundamentals that will absolutely apply. In-game specifics (exact weapon stats, boss patterns, map routes) will be added after release.
1. Understand What Kind of Game This Is
Belmont's Curse is a 2D action-exploration game — the "Metroidvania" style the series pioneered with Symphony of the Night. That means:
- One interconnected castle (or cursed realm) instead of linear levels. Doors you can't open now will become accessible later.
- Ability-gated progression. New movement powers — the classic examples are double jump, transformation forms, and slide tackles — unlock previously unreachable areas.
- RPG systems. The Steam tags list both Action RPG and RPG: expect leveling, equipment and stat growth on top of pure action.
2. Combat Basics (From the Team's Track Record)
Evil Empire and Motion Twin's Dead Cells taught a generation of players how good 2D combat feels. Expect that DNA here:
- Aggression is usually rewarded — butpunishing greed. Learn each enemy's tell before you commit to long combos.
- Mobility is defense. Iframes (invincibility frames) on dodges and jumps are the genre's real health bar. Rolling through an attack beats blocking it.
- Vertical play. 2D action games from this team consistently reward keeping enemies juggled or repositioning above/below them.
3. Map Habits That Save Hours
- Mark locked doors mentally (or on paper). When you get a new ability, your first job is revisiting locked junctions near the last save point — not pushing blindly forward.
- Buy/open every map room. Castlevania games traditionally sell map reveals from an in-castle shopkeeper. Knowing the shape of unexplored space is half the game.
- Leave no teleporter unused. Fast-travel rooms turn a 10-minute backtrack into 30 seconds.
4. Pre-Launch Checklist
- Wishlist / pre-order check: the game launches October 15, 2026 at $29.99 on Steam, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Pre-orders are open per KONAMI's Steam news post.
- Play a "prequel palate": if you have access to older games, Castlevania: Dracula's Curse (the direct story predecessor, NES) and Dead Cells (the developers' previous game) are the two best primers.
- Controller ready: the game has full controller support; a d-pad or good thumbstick matters in precise 2D action.
- Disk space: ~10 GB on PC.
